There’s an audio track called “Interview Flexi” on the end of the 2 disc deluxe edition of Goo. It’s an audio collage of songs from the album, which fade into the background, and overtop of which are tracks of the band members talking about the songs. Being Sonic Youth, a lot of the stuff they’re saying is pretty weird and has only a tangential connection to the songs they’re talking about. The quote on Kim’s t-shirt in this picture comes from her explanation of the song “Kool Thing.” This is the full text of that explanation:
“Lying on my bed, staring at the tapestry on the wall. There are two scantily dressed white girls. One has a dagger in her hand. They’re looking at a black panther up in a tree hissing at them. What is the meaning of this picture? Is it about Patty Hearst and the SLA? What did she fantasize about in that closet? Did she become a member of the SLA because women, being outside of the male-structured world, do make more natural anarchists? The conclusion: girls invented punk rock. Not England. Not the US. Girls.”
Not exactly a concrete, easily interpreted statement, but nonetheless I’ve always thought it was fucking awesome.
